....A symbol can convey several messages at once. The first thing that I notice is what a symbol is in itself. On the surface symbols carry with them this key physical information. Beneath there are the underlying ideas, feelings, and familiar histories present in what a symbol represents. When certain unrelated symbols interact, their meanings are integrated in a way that can lead to the loss of information. One of my interests in this body of work is how meaning is circuitous: how it is layered, hidden and the ways in which symbols are used to construct myths.
....The specific symbols that I have chosen each have a unique identity. When they are looked at as a whole they form a group identity, or rather, a single symbol with multiple meanings. Our ability to find the source of this meaning becomes hindered when viewing the work within this larger context. This kind of phenomena is totally pervasive. Fragments of information pile up on our sidewalks, in the media and in our pockets; we are subtly shaped by all of this interference. If the symbol’s source is obscured and if it’s intention is unknown, can we acknowledge it as fact? How susceptible are we to lies and distortion? How is truth mediated? I have attempted to exercise control over and channel this flood of questionable information into the work. By implementing a pattern and ordering these symbols I feel more at ease with the abundance of myth in my life. |
